Is Head Movement Still Needed for Noun Incorporation

چکیده
This paper compares Baker’s head-movement analysis of noun incorporation to alternative nonlexicalist theories of noun incorporation, including Massam’s pseudoincorporation analysis, Van Geenhoven’s base generation analysis, and the Koopman/Szabolcsi analysis in terms of remnant movement. It is shown that the headmovement approach captures important facts about noun incorporation in the Mapudungun language that the other theories would so far leave unexplained. I conclude that the device of head-movement is still needed in generative theory, contrary to the reductivist hopes of some minimalist syntacticians.

On the Syntax of Surface-Adjacency: The Case of Pseudo Noun Incorporation
Pseudo noun incorporation constructions in Sakha and Tamil obey a strict linear adjacency condition, such that not only the NP but its head noun must be adjacent to the verb at PF. I argue that this adjacency condition can be explained if the head of the NP adjoins to the verb to create a unit that is interpreted as a complex predicate at LF. The resulting structure can be linearized at PF if a...
متن کاملNoun Incorporation in Frisian
Noun incorporation in Frisian (Dyk 1997) is unusual because it shows certain restrictions that are not seen in other languages with noun incorporation, such as Mohawk and Chukchi. In addition, while others argue that noun incorporation is indeed possible in Germanic (see Booij 2009 for Dutch, Barrie and Spreng 2009 for German), Frisian is unusual even with respect to Germanic in allowing noun i...

In his recent article (Shlonsky, U., 2004. The form of Semitic noun phrases. Lingua 114, 1465–1526), Shlonsky proposes a phrasal-movement analysis of word order in Hebrew (and Arabic) noun phrases and argues that the positioning of nominal modifiers with respect to the head-noun cannot be adequately handled by an N-raising derivation. In the present article I argue that in fact the head movemen...
متن کاملIncorporation in Danish: Implications for Interfaces a Collection of Papers on Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar
Syntactic noun incorporation (SNI) in Danish is a phenomenon that has reeexes in phonology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. In contrast with morphological noun incorporation, which involves compounding of an N stem and a V stem to yield a larger, derived V stem (Mithun, 1984, 847), SNI does not involve any overt word order perturbation or overt morphology, but is rather expressed prosodically...
